Read:

Columbine by Dave Cullen

I’ve started listening to the You’re Wrong About episode on Columbine and this book features heavily in the episode. I’ve only read the first two chapters so far but I’m really interested to learn what is true and what was speculation presented as truth.

Spanish Tortilla - The Candid Appetite (recipe)

John and I spent part of our honeymoon in Spain where I ate Tortilla Espanola every day. It’s such a simple dish - eggs, potatoes, onions and olive oil - but I’ve never tried making it. I really should; it’s such a great dish.

Listen:

You’re Wrong About… (podcast)

I firmly believe that what I don’t know could fill a barn, so this is quickly becoming my favorite podcast because it revisits topics I think I know about and unlocks more information. Check out the series on OJ Simpson - it’s fascinating.

Saltwater - Geowulf

Aussie indie pop for a Saturday morning

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart - JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound

Post-punky indie soul Wilco cover that sounds delicious regardless of time or day.

Watch:

Kodachrome (Netflix)

Based on an Sulzberger article for the Times, this drama stars Jason Sudeikis, Elizabeth Olsen and Ed Harris. It’s sweet and sad and worth spending a Saturday afternoon on.

THEM (Amazon Prime)

Hugely derivative of Jordan Peele’s style with a real emphasis on black pain (it’s a horror show so I guess pain is to be expected) but beautifully shot with amazing performances. I’m four episodes down and I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle how dark it gets.

Eat/Drink:

Gin Gin Buck

Everyone should have a signature cocktail and a signature scent. Unfortunately, Elizabeth and James stopped making my signature (is there a good alternate out there that smells like Bourbon?). Luckily, I still have my signature cocktail - the Gin Gin Buck. It’s a Moscow Mule with gin instead of vodka.

2 oz of Bluecoat American Dry Gin
5oz of Owen’s Ginger Beer and Lime
Ice

Shake the ice around in the glass to get it nice and cold.
Pour the gin and top with the ginger beer and lime.
Swirl gently to get the flavors dancing.
Drink.
Repeat.

Homemade Pizza

Dough from Publix or Whole Food topped with slices of mozzarella, roasted corn, onions and fresh jalapenos and served with Mike’s Hot Honey and Truff Hot Sauce.

No, I’m not pregnant again. I just eat like I am.

Lupita’s

They have corn-flour tortillas, the best horchata, goblets of margaritas and housemade hot sauce in squeezy bottles which I’m convinced is the reason I went into labor early.

Misc:

Poppin’ Off Popcorn Seasoning Kit (Chrissy Teigen)

Olivia Pope might have popularized it but I have been all about popcorn for dinner since I was in college. My standard seasoning is salt, sugar and cayenne but I kinda love the idea of French Onion Soup popcorn.

Because onions on everything always and forever.

Also, LOVE Chrissy Teigen. I mean, false eyelashes and food - I feel that deep in my soul.

Doing Your Goddamn Best

There have been a lot of 3:00am wake-up calls in my life lately. Will’s teething and while he is being a super champ about it, it undoubtedly sucks.

So, what do you do when your kid doesn’t feel well and has a tendency to sneeze snotballs directly onto your neck?

You do your goddamn best.

And sometimes, that means opening the front door and watching the storm together while you drink gin out of your ‘Mom’ wine glass.
