Nonpareils - 5

Nonpareils - 5

This started as a weekly round-up of what was going on in my life and then, my life happened. Turns out, having a job, an infant son, two dogs, friends and family keeps you busy so now - it’s less weekly but hopefully regular.

Read:

Ariadne - Jennifer Saint

I got into reimagined Greek Mythology ever since I read Circe by Madeline Miller. Ariadne is the story of the Cretan princess who helped Theseus beat the Minotaur. It is a heartbreaking, beautifully woven story and I’m really looking forward to reading more of Saint’s work.

Medusa Reimagined by Kayleigh Dunne

Keeping in line with the reimagined Greek myths, this is a feminist retelling of the Medusa myth. What I wouldn’t give to see this on-screen.

Yearbook by Seth Rogen

I laughed out loud at like, 35 different points while reading this book. It’s basically Superbad which is one of my favorite movies ever. Rogen is a masterful storyteller with a heart the size of a Buick and a tolerance for weed to match.

I love him and if dude is ever in West Palm and wants weed-infused Indian food, I’ll figure out how to make some banging bhang baingan bharta or chicken toke-a masala. These are the jokes, folks. These are the jokes.

Listen:

Arrested Behavior - My Favorite Murder (podcast)

I started watching a documentary about Lacey Peterson when I was pregnant which is literally the dumbest thing I could have ever have done.

No soft cheeses, no alcohol and no true stories about brutal violence against women - especially pregnant women.

Karen and Georgia do an excellent job recounting the case and firmly believe that Peterson is guilty. This is a really well-done episode but given the harrowing information, I wish I didn’t know the details.

Watch:

Boogie Nights (1997)

My husband loves this movie and when he found out that I hadn’t seen it - “WHAT?! Baby! You went to film school!” (I minored in cinema studies) - he was insistent that we watch it. And you know what? It was great. Excellent cast and it ended on a far more optimistic note than I anticipated because my thought was, “Oh, it’s about the porn industry in the 70s/80s? Yeah - everyone fucking dies. No pun intended.

Master of None presents: Moments in Love (Netflix)

I’ve started watching the third season which centers on Lena Waithe’s character Denise and it’s a real departure from previous seasons. Aziz Ansari’s Dev is a minor character and Eric Wareheim is nowhere to be seen - no big bud and little bud foodie adventures. It’s a much heavier, slower moving series - one that invites introspection into your own life and relationships.

Eat/Drink:

Old Florida Gourmet Nice N Spicy Tortilla Chips

I love a good seasoned tortilla chip and like, 90% of them get it wrong. Old Florida Gourmet is a local company who makes the best seasoned tortilla chips with paprika, chili and garlic. They’re delicious.

Cheerios

The best snack to share with your kid.

Mango Passion Fruit Margaritas

Thank you to the bartender at Great Bay Beach on St. Thomas for crafting a perfect drink.

Nachos from The Taco Spot on Hollywood Beach

I just found out yesterday that this place is closing which is such a shame because their nacho and hot sauce game was on point. Fresh jalapenos on nachos (or pizza or mac and cheese or anything) are a game day player.

Misc:

John Mulaney

I have SO many opinions on this but as someone who has gone through a divorce, I’m just going to shut the fuck up and wish both John and Annamarie peace. I’m really looking forward to seeing John’s new stand-up and wish him well during recovery.
