COVID Christmas

COVID Christmas

My favorite Christmas songs are the ones with a touch of melancholy about them as evidenced by my Christmas Spotify playlist.

There is something about the combination of Christmas lights, the cold and red wine that makes a girl feel pensive and reflective.

Sometimes, Christmas can be a tough time of year (looking at you, Christmas 2012) and not the hap, hap, happiest time since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny fucking Kaye.

Given that John tested positive for COVID, I tested negative and Will is still unvaccinated - we will not be able to spend Christmas together.

You have one job as parents - keep your kids safe - and that’s what we’re trying to do.

Given the spike in COVID numbers recently, I’m guessing this is a common theme across the country.

And while it sucks that we won’t all be together on Christmas morning, I keep coming back to one of my favorite Christmas movies - Scrooged - and Bill Murray’s words of wisdom:

“Bitch hit me with a toaster.”

Wait. No. Wrong line.

“It can happen every day. You’ve just gotta want that feeling.”

I’m not a Christian so my celebration of the holiday is purely secular. That being the case, that’s what Christmas is to me - a feeling. A memory. A scent. A taste. And it isn’t something that can only be celebrated on the 25th.

We’ll wait until everyone is healthy and then, we’ll celebrate together with mulled wine and German gingerbread. We’ll look up at the tree, breathing in the clean scent of pine, and remember where we got our favorite ornaments. We’ll listen to great music and cuddle up with our dogs.

And someday soon, we all will be together, if the fates allow.
Until then, we'll have to muddle through somehow.

So, here’s to muddling through. Here’s to being together when the fates allow and here’s to a healthy and happy Christmas to us all.

P.S. - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is not only my favorite movie but my favorite Christmas movie.

I mean, if that doesn’t encapsulate the 2021 Holiday Season, I don’t know what does.
