SunFest 2018 - Day 1

SunFest 2018 - Day 1

Some people love Halloween - dressing up in costumes and decorating their homes to look like set pieces from The Addams Family.

Some people love Christmas - one of my teachers in high school had like, seven different Christmas trees in her house. I respect that kind of commitment. Especially since my Christmas decorating consists of pulling out all of the ornaments we got in Germany and pouring increasing amounts of Amaretto into my hot chocolate as I listen to Michael Buble holiday standards.

My favorite time of the year is SunFest (well, and Thanksgiving but that's just because I am a human being in possession of a soul).

A four day waterfront music and art festival in the heart of downtown West Palm Beach, SunFest represents the best of my hometown and every year, I get a chance to shimmy in the sunshine while doing my favorite thing in the world - listening to live music.

Between 2011-2012, I was obsessed with Girl Talk's All Day album. It was pretty much the only thing I would play in my car and I think it kinda warped the way I listen to music. I can't listen to Sabbath's War Pigs without wanting to slide a little Luda in there.

Last night, I got to see Girl Talk perform for the first time.

And the show was incredible. It felt like the best house party I never went to in college. Gregg Gillis slipped-and-slid through dozens of genres of music and I got to do one of my favorite things in this world - shout Biggie lyrics in public.

I hung out with the people I love, I got drenched from intermittent blasts of water, I made a new friend who sang Drake's God's Plan to me and I shimmied my ass off while singing out loud. I checked my phone last night and apparently, I "walked" six miles. Yeah - 5.5 of that is dancing wildly in the middle of Flagler Drive.

And the night ended, as all good nights do, with tacos and Mexican food. Jimmychangas is no Lupita's but they make a damn good margarita and their salsa verde game is fuerte y en fuego.

And tonight - I get to do it all over again but this time, I'm seeing Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real (GUYS. Not only is he Willie's son but dude also performed Texas Flood at Farm Aid with his dad and it's so good and my biggest-biggest-biggest regret in this life is not seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan perform when he was still alive and I was a child. I was seven when he died but that's no excuse) and Nate Rateliff and the Night Sweats.

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

I'll see y'all on the Middle Barge.
